Hat Shop Sew-A-Long, last post.
Adding your borders is all that is left to do!
This can be done in a couple of different ways however, I will only be describing how I actually, chose to finish this quilt.
Borders.
First up, the inner 1″ (finish size) black border. Make sure that your window blocks are squared up by trimming, measuring and placing your tracings over them before you add this border. Pay special attention to you last row of blocks so that all of the items will appear to be sitting on the bottom shelf of your window. It was necessary for me to trim mine about 1/2″. Then pin and sew with your 1/4″ seam.

Secondly sew on your gray borders to three sides. Top, right and left. I cut them 2″ for an inch and a half finish.

Bottom border.
Because I did not want to stitch around the appliquéd bricks after the borders were added to the quilt top, I simply strip pieced both of the borders together to treat the entire unit as the bottom border. Then I arranged the bricks (omitting one) making up the window sill approximately 1/4″ or so apart, evenly to fit directly under the black inner border. When I was satisfied with the placement, I fused the bricks to the gray and black unit, overlapping the seam slightly. This made stitching down the bricks much easier to manage than turning the entire quilt. I did however, stray from the pattern a bit. As you can see, the brick window ledge was confined to the bottom border only. You can choose to add two more bricks, one on each end after you add your side borders. I plan to do this as I show in the last photo in the segment below.

If you made it through the Hat Shop SAL, be proud of yourself! I was, and also quite surprised. This was a very intimidating challenge for me but I pushed through and learned much by making this project. Now my top is off to the quilter and I will share the finished piece with you soon.

new year
&
a new work space!

At last
JOY STUDIO
is complete!!

1 year ago,
we were
insulated, waiting for drywall and
Still Seeking Light.
•
Time capsule.
•
Well, we found it.
Windows on every wall, eight skylights and two sets of French doors with connecting elliptical above each one.
At most times of the day, the room is flooded with a generous amount of natural light.
And I love it!!!
•
Builders on the project couldn’t understand the need for so many windows and I was questioned from every tradesman.
I stuck to my (never enough light) priority and it turned out to be the right decision, no question.
So, beginning 2018
Joy Studio
is completely finished, furnished and finally, ready for (hiding out) creative action.

Hurray!
The Great Corset Challenge is complete.
We received so many wonderful works using our Press On Maker’s Guide, corset portion of the pattern. We want to thank ALL of you for participating and would love to hear your feedback. The three Joy Studio Maker’s Guides are new this year so, we want to gather everyone’s thoughts on using this one. The entries included so many interpretations achieving great results. It has been a pleasure to see them all and an honor to have so many talented women join our challenge. Impossible task to choose only three.

I almost extended the deadline on the challenge this week. With the devastation in Texas and our own family’s loss on Monday, the Corset Challenge seamed silly next to these serious life events. Then I considered what creating offers me and I’m sure many of you and that is comfort. In the darkest times of my life, the ability that God gave me to create has helped me tremendously. I did not want to minimize the heart and effort that all of us put into these very skillful works. Happy New Year!
Still seeking light. And still hopeful,
in more ways than just a bright, well lit work space of course.
However,
I decided to share the Joy Studio portion and progress on our big project, to start out the blog year.
•
If you’ve been following us in the past two years you may remember that as we outgrew our work space it was necessary to rent additional office and Etsy shop storage areas. This was working out nicely until our shop managers MOVED! So, everything came back to the home studio causing quite the challenge in 2016.
Here’s the timeline in a photo nutshell.

With the former home studio now full of fabric, office and Etsy shop we (I) decided to build on our home site. A scary project but a long time dream that I never thought would be realized. Still waiting but it’s looking like in 2017, it may really happen!

Walls Went Up
Roof Went On
Wrapped While Waiting for Windows
We were told the wait for windows would be five weeks! Then they came, in a big storm. Windows were wrong. It was then we discovered that two of the four walls were also, wrong. So, they came down and we waited for windows. And waited. And waited. It would be another five weeks. Second try, they were wrong again. Windows held up the studio project until December.

We kept going luckily, wrapping walls, running wires and having HVAC installed.

I am starting the new year working in the designated drawing station in the dinning room at my dad’s drawing table. I’m feeling snug and . . . GRATEFUL.
