Unexpected Guest

Creepy! While writing an E-mail last evening I heard the slightest rustle of a paper bag to my left. Suddenly it dawned on me, what would make that kind of a noise about ten feet to my left? I glanced in that direction, began to get up to investigate and there he was, a big black snake! Inside! Living in the woods I am use to being mindful of snakes when I’m outside but inside? So, how did he get in and how long has he been a visitor? Eeks. We kindly released him outdoors where he slithered beneath the landscaped stone wall. See you next Spring, OUTSIDE!

The Black Rat Snake (Elaphe obsoleta) — also called pilot black snake or simply black snake[1] — is a non-venomous colubrid species found in North America. It prefers heavily wooded areas and is known for having excellent climbing ability, including the ability to climb the trunk of large mature trees without the aid of branches. No subspecies are currently recognized.

Length may range from 42 to 72 inches, making the black rat snake one of Missouri’s largest snakes. This species is well-known for its ability to climb trees. They are found statewide and live in a variety of habitats, including rocky wooded hillsides, wooded riverbanks, in or near farm buildings and in large brush piles.

Balance

Still struggling to achieve that elusive “healthy balance” of all that we try to fit into our busy lives. Seems to be an ongoing goal. Walking is the one healthy activity that has worked for my schedule or is most consistent, although, I’ve even abandoned that for many months. Today, will be three days of WALKING in a row! Next on my list for 2010, strengthening exercise, eating right and cutting down on caffeine to name a few.

Morning Cup

There isn’t much that can compare with that first cup of coffee in the morning. Nothing in fact. Well, I can’t believe it but after many years of perfecting that winning combination of condiments, I’m about to change the recipe. Aaaaaaah! I’m going to TRY to leave my favorite, non dairy creamer, top leading brand of course, for the real stuff. Heavy whipping cream. It looks pretty when pouring into the cup but what about the taste? What about the taste! What’s next, Decaf?

The heavy china cup and saucer belonged to my grandmother. There are just two and one platter. Hey, who put that lace in my coffee?

Snow Downside

There is nothing like going back to basics to really slow your life down. We rely on two satellite dishes for television and internet. So, with yesterday’s snow on the dish, we were forced to get creative when we lost service.

The Rest of the Story

OK, this morning was the first time that I was faced with big trouble while blogging since I began. I lost today’s post trying to edit, lost a comment, pretty sure that I threw both in the trash and became completely frustrated. Technical difficulties will sure rob you of your joy, eh? The rest of today’s post included our snowfall of four inches and I’ll gladly take any and all the snow I can get.

God’s greatest show, snow.
