New Year, New Fun

Hello and a Happy New Year to all of YOU!

I’m running slightly behind already following so much holiday activity and art deadlines in January but,

I still thought there might be time for some fabric fun!?!!

How about another Valentine Post Card Exchange?

I really enjoyed seeing your amazing creativity from the first one, which you can see on Pinterest.

It’s a small project so you can stitch up quick and embellish (or not) any way you like, no challenge this time

however,

I do have Riley Blake Designs Paperdoll fabric panels and fat quarters to GIVEAWAY!!

How does a random drawing of the participants sound?

The winner will be drawn from delivered post cards.

All you have to do is sign up by sending me an email with your name and the address where you wish to receive your card.

I’ll match everyone to a partner and send you back the info.

• Email to janet@greatjoystudio.com

• Use any Riley Blake Designs fabric, although I’d love it if you used Paperdoll.

•Sew and send your cards to the partner we assign by February14, or sooner.

That’s it!

Sew . . . who’s in?!!!

OH, and btw, the Man and the M O O N applique pattern above is printed!

Folding and filling and

Merry, Merry!

H E L L O  T H E R E !

As you can see, I jumped from our Halloween Quilt Market booth straight to Christmas here on the blog. November and most of December I focused on new art, patterns and regular life. Time is still the number one creative schedule handicap. Can’t seam to get everything done.

However, I do want to take this time to post a sincere thank you for your support of the products, encouragement and following me with the likes and very kind comments throughout the past year . . . and, longer!!! It really feels great to know that we share a creative connection.

YOU keep me going!

Thank you makers and creators. 😉

And –

Wishing you the best of EVERYTHING in the new year!

Fall Quilt Market 2018

Hello!

Once again we were off to Houston last week in October with our new fabric collection,

Costume Makers Ball

presented at Fall Quilt Market by

Riley Blake Designs.

Just in case you didn’t catch this on IG or FB I decided to share a few photos and info.

The collection is for Halloween, twenty-nineteen and delivers to shops in April.

These fabrics are available to the trade (shops) now so please, check with you local shops to make sure they’ll have in the Spring.

It’s a very fun group to work with and I’m thinking you will agree!

As you can see above, we’ve created some great projects for this line and they’ll become available with the fabric release.

You may also notice that we’ve dressed our Makers Guide She Who Sews girls up too and will be offering these Halloween appliqué add on’s as downloadables.

Oh yes, and we won a prize!

Two actually!!

One to Riley Blake Designs for Best Multiple Booth award.

And we received the Most Creative Booth award.

FUN right!?!!

And for a little extra touch, our live action model dressed as the main panel was in the booth on Saturday. A photo with her offered visitors a chance at some Paperdoll fat quarter bundles in a daily giveaway throughout the show.

To top it off, we enjoyed special guest, Jenny Doan from Missouri Star Quilting! Yay

It was all, quite a Treat.

Pop Up Paperdoll Challenge!

A 2018 CHALLENGE

has been on my mind all summer!

I wasn’t sure when we were going to get it in!

Then, during our Paperdoll Trunk Show at the MSQC Birthday Bash in Hamilton , I enjoyed a visit with Rhonda!!

She, like many of you has participated in the previous challenges, supported my efforts on social media and followed us faithfully.

It was a wonderful surprise!

And it was great to meet her in person and share. Thank you Rhonda.

We talked about doing another Post Card Challenge and exchange as we did for Valentines ’15 and still getting it in for this year.

However, I’m thinking . . . we’ll hold that thought for 2019 due to time, and I just may have the perfect NEW collection for a card challenge.

So, just this week,

I started working on an idea that I had for using the Paperdoll (main) Panel. A Needle Book Apron! I liked it so much then thought, ah ha

C H A L L E N G E ! ? ! ! !

At first, I thought Needle Book Apron Challenge? Sounds fun but did we want to limit it to aprons? Then it came to me,

PAPERDOLL

NEEDLE BOOK CHALLENGE

just popped up!

And, whatever that title conjures up in your maker’s mind is OK.

Your project can be an apron, or anything you dream up following a few simple rules:

• You must use one of the J Wecker Frisch Paperdoll Panels from Riley Blake Designs, either the main or patch panels.

• Additional fabrics must be from the Paperdoll collection or any Riley Blake Designs Confetti Cottons Basics.

• You must complete project and send photos (janet@greatjoystudio.com) before Fall Quilt Market. We’ll set an October 27th deadline.

• You must share on all (or any you have) of your social media platforms, Blogs, Facebook and Instagram using #needlebookchallenge

• You must follow us and Riley Blake Designs also on social media channels.

Instagram – J Wecker Frisch & Riley Blake Designs

Facebook – Joy Studio and Riley Blake Designs

Here on the Joy Studio Blog would be excellent! Although optional.

Post your progress photos on the same J Wecker Frisch or Joy Studio, FB or IG pages anytime using links above!

Be sure to use #needlebookchallenge so we can view collectively.

Oh, and did I mention PRIZES!?!!!

Winner will receive,

LANG She WHO SEWS Calendar Mini & Planner

LANG Draw Near Sketchbook

Paperdoll Fabric FQ

& a boxed LANG She Who Sews, Run the Race mug!

I would like us ALL, along with our panel of judges to vote for the winner so again, we must have your photos for that.

Each participant gets two votes, one for their own project and the other must be for someone else. 😉

Winner announced from Quilt Market! Can I do that? Lol

What did I forget?

Please join and have fun with you version of the Paperdoll Needle Book!

I look forward to seeing what YOU make!!!

Good luck Makers!

Making Faces

In this post I wanted to show how you can break down the She Who Sews figures using the Maker’s Guides into three main sections, part one. Some of you have already tried the Press On corset portion in the Great Corset Challenge last summer however, in this post we are starting at the top!

The faces/heads!

The two fabric faces below were made by Aunt Henri using Riley Blake Basics earlier this year.

I decided to continue my watercolor paper version shown above. She still needs eye detail. The great thing about these large scale studio figures is that they are not limited to any specific craft medium. Mix ’em up and have fun, you’re the maker.

The pattern guides are actually much easier to tackle when broken down into the main sections,

Background,

Head,

Body.

*

The single most important thing to remember about constructing the face is to follow the placement sheet accurately, especially the eyes just as you would follow any other applique pattern. That is key! Then you will achieve the specific Handmaids® girl of your choosing, every time!

Stitching the detail, is another lesson which I am still learning. However, it will be a cinch for all of you experienced sewers.

We are just getting ready to begin building a Machine Maid version using a new 2019 Halloween collection from Riley Blake Designs.

So, if you want to see this group in your local quilt shop next April, ask them about it now. It is currently available to the trade.

&

We’ll be sharing some Quilt Market sneak peeks too so keep watching!!

Original canvas tote bag test, sewn by Ann Regal.
